There's a type of power in a Kanye West co-sign and Fetty Wap is proving to be one of his most promising picks. Meet the 24-year-old rap sensation who is currently racing up the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with his debut single "Trap Queen" (below), the track he performed alongside Yeezus in New York last month that had audience members Beyoncé and Jay Z dancing along. "I was going over how I was feeling," Fetty Wap says of his melodic trap track, at No. 35 on the Hot 100 this week. "Me and my lady were discussing things. We wanted to get matching foreign cars and a big house. It was basically like a dream. But I just put the dream into words, into a melody and everybody loved it. And now the dream's becoming a reality."
Based off "Trap Queen," some may struggle to place the rising star into one genre...and he understands the difficulty.
"I describe my sound as real melodic and gritty; it's like a hood sing-a-long," he says, citing influences like Gucci Mane, Rich Homie Quan and Future. "I don't really think I'm a hip hop artist, honestly. I don't want to say I'm hip hop. I'm not a rapper, I'm not a singer, I'm not a lyricist, I don't do what everybody else do. I just make music, I make good music. I'm just Fetty Wap."
With a self-titled mixtape coming later this year and "Trap Queen" still on rise, look out for Fetty to remain one of 2015's Kanye-approved stars to watch.
