Watch the Intriguing Trailer for Netflix's Nina Simone Documentary
While we wait and wait for Hollywood's Zoe Saldana–starring version of Nina Simone's life, Netflix has snuck up with a potentially excellent documentary. Titled What Happened, Miss Simone? and directed by doc veteran Liz Garbus, the film will debut exclusively on Netflix on June 26. (It opened the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.)
The feature's bound to showcase a bevy of archival footage, but a main draw will be Nina's now-52-year-old daughter Lisa. "People think that when she went out onstage, she became Nina Simone," Lisa Simone narrates in the first trailer. "My mother was Nina Simone 24/7, and that's where it became a problem. Everything fell apart." Lisa, who acts and sings under the one-name handle Simone, has spoken about her conflicted, volatile relationship with her mother in the past. Nina died in France in 2003 at the age of 70.
