Update (5/14): Watch the latest Backyard Session, this time with Ariana Grande.
Miley Cyrus is really moving past the Flaming Lips psych-dabbling and claiming her own retro bona fides. Last week she launched the Happy Hippie Foundation, which seeks to "fight the injustices faced by homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations.”
Supporting the new nonprofit are the Backyard Sessions, which take place, appropriately, behind Miley’s house. So far we’ve seen moving collaborations with Joan Jett and Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace. Today we’ve got a pair of Melanie Safka hits redone with absurd levels of panache—and with the legendary singer-songwriter there for the party. See "Peace Will Come (According To Plan)" above and ”Look What They've Done To My Song Ma" below.
Safka, who performs simply as Melanie, has been strumming and singing for four decades. Her rugged, soaring voice is a perfect match for Miley’s; it’s hard to believe these two are just singing in a back yard, rather than onstage at the Grand Ole Opry or Woodstock ’69. (Which, incidentally, featured Melanie on the bill.)
Miley calls Melanie “a hippie hero & Always a prophet of a peace” in the Facebook caption. Every Backyard Session is premiering on the Bangerz star’s page, with its 47 million Likes. We can't wait to see what's up next.
