How do you become a gazillionaire EDM superstar like Calvin Harris (he earned $66 million between 2013 and 2014), David Guetta ($30 million in the same timeframe), Avicii and Tiesto (who both pulled in $28 million)?
Step one: Drop the bass.
Step two: Be Zac Efron. "If you're a DJ, all you need is a laptop, some talent and one track," Efron, playing ascendant EDM hero Cole Carter, says in the new trailer for We Are Your Friends. "That track is your ticket to everything." And that track, in Carter's opinion, is not Beyoncé and Jay Z's "Drunk in Love."
The film, due August 28, is the directorial debut from Catfish co-host and cinematographer Max Joseph, who also co-wrote the script. The fun/silly parts will include Las Vegas jaunts, Coachella-ready outfits, and Electric Daisy Carnival–esque fests. The heavy-handed parts will include issues like "loyalty," face-punching and deep-seated grudges (true to EDM life), and getting "your head out of that laptop" to "start listening to what the real world's trying to tell you."
All will be forgiven if the Lonely Island make an appearance.
