Apple Music has already produced exclusives from Drake (that "Energy" video—whoa!), Eminem and Pharrell, and now the new streaming service further proves it has its finger on the pulse by premiering a music video from the always-provocative M.I.A.
The six-minute short film, titled "Matahdatah Scroll 01 Broader Than a Border," shows the singer in India and the Ivory Coast. There's footage of Maya riding a horse, intense female sword fighters and a male dancer performing a mind-blowing dance routine. The vid features the new M.I.A. song "Swords," along with "Warriors," a cut from her 2013 album Matangi. Check out "Matandah" above via Apple Music.
In May, M.I.A. tweeted that she "wants to talk about clutrural [sic] appropriation. I've been told I can't put out a video because it's shot in Africa." It's not totally clear if this is the visual she's referring to, but it's likely as we don't expect Maya to have a stash of short films she shot in Africa sitting around the house.
M.I.A. has teased everything from her fifth album to a new mixtape to an upcoming visual album coming this year. While it's not clear exactly what route she's taking, she did tweet that she's "off to make #MATAHDATAH scroll 2," giving us hope that another short film is on the way.
