The original Muppet Show wrapped a crazy 34 years ago. Muppet Babies went off the air in 1990. Muppets Tonight existed for a brief 22 episodes from 1996 to 1998. Since then: no Muppets on TV except for rerun Muppets.
The drought's about to end with—wait for it—The Muppets. Premiering on ABC this fall, the series will be a mockumentary costarring a slew of non-Muppet humans. And presuming the episodes will run a typical 22 minutes, today's 11-minute preview means you're getting half of The Muppets pilot. (Or a pilot-style teaser.)
We can attribute the fuzzy Jim Henson progenies' return to the two film revivals, 2011's The Muppets (don't confuse it for the TV show!) and 2014's Muppets most Wanted. The original pulled $165.2 million worldwide; the sequel made $80.4 million. Not the biggest numbers, which might point to why the beloved franchise is returning to its original medium for a while.
