Grimes wrote, produced, recorded and sang her entire brilliant Art Angels album. Before that, she wrote, directed, edited, colored and art-directed the complex, time-hopping-themed video for her new single "Flesh Without Blood."
We sat down with the latest Fuse First artist pick to get the back story behind each character she created and how they relate to her. Watch our exclusive interview above, then read on for more about each character along with a full visual.
1. Skreechy Bat: "In my head, when I write music, it's Skreechy Bat, because Grimes has been very abstracted from reality."
2. I.V.: "She's sort-of a demon—this so embarrassing—leader of the album. God, I can't say it out loud [laughs]. I was like, 'If I was writing a manga, what would it be like?' She's kind of like the demonic, evil overlord."
3. Kill v. Maim: "Just the vampire."
4. Roccoco Basilisk: "I don't know if you've heard of Roko's Basilisk." [This character's inspired by the concept.] "She's doomed to be eternally tortured by an artificial intelligence, but she's also kind of like Marie Antoinette."
