While also being an incredibly danceable pop tune, Tegan and Sara's "Boyfriend" single also plays around with gender norms in a fun way. In this Fuse interview, Sara explains how the concept came about:
"I like this idea of old-fashioned roles because I'm gay. And partnering with a woman, it's sometimes fun to refer to certain things like taking the garbage out as like what your boyfriend does. Like where's our boyfriend? And it's sort of tongue-in-cheek, and I think sometimes those gender roles or norms were really harmful in the past and I feel really lucky they don't come to play in my own relationship."
The singers also discuss choosing singles their fans will gravitate to, as well as how they divide the workload when promoting songs they've written individually (Tegan is getting a little break this time around).
