Godsmack's Sully Erna Explains How He Got His Dad on His Album
Godsmack's Sully Erna went solo in September with his Hometown Life album (Fuse premiered the title track). The project drew him away from hard rock and placed him into something a little bit funkier. He even dived into a country flair, which, admittedly, he didn't expect.
When Erna visited the Fuse studios he told the story about his new direction and how he got his father to play on the album.
"There was a real great moment here when this song just sort of happened," Erna said about "Turn It Up!," which features his dad, Salvatore. "But when it happened, I was like, 'No, this isn't going to be strings and cellos. This is going to be horns. This is punchy and it needs to be really funky.' And then I thought, what a great opportunity. I can finally do a piece with my dad, which I've never been able to do."
"So he came and recorded the track with us, we even got to do a live show where I put him front and center in front of this three-piece horn section. You know, it's really great to have that memory now, to be able to take that with us."
