'American Teen' Khalid Explains How Kylie Jenner Boosted 'Location' & More

"I didn't expect to be in this position, especially for me because I was just a regular high school kid," says the singer/songwriter

It's a surreal feeling to be an American teen, dropping a 15-track album titled American Teen and being a recent high school graduate of Americas High School. This is how Khalid simply puts it when describing his debut project.

At the young age of nineteen, Khalid's soothing soulful vocals are making major headway and climbing the charts. The music video for his breakout hit "Location" has over 16 million views and his followup single "Saved" is rising on the Hot R&B Songs list.

"The reason why I released 'Location,' it was around senior prom and I hadn't released anything on SoundCloud in a longtime, but on my graduation day Kylie Jenner played the record on her Snapchat which was insane because the record, it's almost like it skyrocketed."

American Teen is the perfect combination of alternative, soul and R&B. Khalid speaks on where he gets his musical inspiration:

"I grew up off of a lot of alternative music, American folk music, pop, indie all of that. I love Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks—amazing. 'Dreams,' hands down one of my favorite records ever."
