The last two weeks have been intense for Green Day fans: The band dropped the first album in their promised trilogy and Billie Joe Armstrong had an onstage meltdown and checked himself into rehab. And now this: The punk trio recorded a brand new tune called "The Forgotten" for the soundtrack to The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, which also features new music from Ellie Goulding, Feist, Passion Pit and more.
Who knew the Dookie dudes were such Twihards? Bassist Mike Dirnt explained the punks' affiliation with the tweenie bopper flick to Yahoo: "When we were asked to be part of soundtrack, we readily agreed because the films are an insane cultural phenomenon, and we have always been impressed with the way the Twilight soundtracks are so carefully curated."
Dirnt has a point, honestly. Past Twilight soundtracks have included an unexpectedly diverse (and impressive) crew of artists: Grizzly Bear, the Killers, Bruno Mars, Thom Yorke, Florence + the Machine, Death Cab for Cutie and, obvs, Paramore.
In keeping with that eclecticism, the latest Twilight soundtrack gives us new songs from Ellie Goulding, Feist, Passion Pit and returning Twilight vet St. Vincent (she sang a duet with Bon Iver for the last flick). So even if you long for the days when playing a vampire didn't require you to be a brooding sex symbol, you should be excited for this soundtrack.
And in the "isn't that sweet?" category, the soundtrack also features a duet between American Idol season 10 contestant Paul McDonald and Twilight actress Nikki Reed, who met when their respective franchises converged and got married later that year in 2011. Awwww.
