While fellow Disney stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens are looking to shed their innocent images via Spring Breakers, Demi Lovato appears to be taking a musical route to maturity if her new album cover is any indication.
The cover to her third studio album Demi, due out May 14, depicts the pop star topless with her skin covered with silver body paint. Minus the sparkles, Lovato’s look is quite dark as she rocks jet black hair, black nail polish and black lipstick.
Last year, Lovato opened up about her struggles with anxiety, self-harm and bulimia. She told Self magazine last summer, “There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin.”
Now, healthy in 2013, the cover appears to be a declaration that the pop star is fully comfortable in her own skin.
Of the new album, Lovato says in a press statement, "It's better than anything I have ever done! I experimented with a variety of different sounds and poured my heart into writing these songs. I'm so excited for everyone to finally get the chance to hear them!"
The artwork has similar vibes to Christina Aguilera’s Stripped, which also signaled a female singer's musical transition to adulthood and featured the singer, topless, exuding a newfound confidence. That album also featured a myriad of sounds and themes—like hip hop and pop on "Dirrty," rock on "Fighter" and even a riot grrrl vibe with a Latin twist on album track "Make Over."
Will the Demi album spring Lovato into musical maturity? The next indication comes in the music video to first single "Heart Attack" coming next Tuesday night (April 9) when premiered on E! News.
