David Bowie Taps His "Puppet Archive" for Self-Directed New Video
After shooting several glossy, high-end music videos for his new album The Next Day—one starring Tilda Swinton as his wife, another featuring Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard—David Bowie pared it down for his latest video, a self-directed clip for James Murphy's remix to "Love Is Lost." But instead of tapping A-list actors, the Thin White Duke reached into his "legendary archive" and cast a bunch of old-timey (sort-of-frightening) puppets in this video.
Compounding the weirdness is that Bowie—who edited this himself—superimposes his own face on those of the puppets, which gives the whole affair a vague menacing sense of whimsy.
This remix—parenthetically titled "Hello Steve Reich" in a nod to the minimalist composer—comes out on the three-disc expanded edition of The Next Day this Tuesday, which includes 10 new songs/remixes. But for now, enjoy the weirdness of Bowie above.
