UPDATE (12:07 PM): EW reports that Grease officially passed The Wiz! Live, with 12.2 million viewers and a 4.3 rating in the 18-49 demo.

As expected, the telecast of Grease: Live! was a big ratings win for Fox, judging by preliminary numbers.

According to THR, Grease: Live! averaged a 7.4 overnight rating over its three-hour run time, which would put it within striking distance of NBC’s December broadcast of The Wiz! Live. Grease was widely praised for its technical wizardry, as well as the performances of Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit and Vanessa Hudgens, among others.

Grease is Fox’s first foray into live musicals, following NBC’s yearly productions. The Sound of Music Live from 2013 is still the biggest ratings winner, with a 10.9 overnight rating and over 18 million live viewers.

Expect more musicals from both networks; NBC has already announced that Hairspray will be its follow-up to The Wiz! LiveClick here to watch Carly Rae Jepsen’s standout performance from Grease: Live!.
