Fuse's Crate Diggers is an online video series profiling artists and their record collections. The series has included DJ Jazzy Jeff, Pete Rock, Just Blaze, Z-Trip, Cut Chemist and DJ Muggs among others, going on mini-tours of their collections and discussing the rare, obscure and personal albums that had a significant impact on their lives.
For the upcoming special edition of Crate Diggers, Fuse travels to Detroit to explore the record collection of J Dilla, the revered hip hop producer who passed away in 2006 at the age of 32. Dilla’s work with The Roots, Common, Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson and A Tribe Called Quest, alongside his solo material, has made him one of the most influential and revered producers in music.
The special features Talib Kweli, Beat Junkies’ J. Rocc, DJ Spinna, Dilla’s brother and rapper Illa J, Amp Fiddler, Frank Nitt and Dilla’s mom Maureen Yancey discussing the producer’s life, influence and legacy. J. Rocc, DJ Spinna, Nitt and rapper Grap Luva visit his storage facility—seen on-camera for the first time—to look into a portion of the producer’s records.
Watch the trailer above, featuring Dilla's mom showing off the artwork painted by Questlove, Erykah Badu and songwriter/producer James Poyser in honor of her son.
