Compton rapper Buddy has spent the majority of his professional career on the sidelines. But after grinding for a decade or so, the precocious and talented Buddy has finally had the breakthrough that he has worked so hard for.
The “Shine” artist was first discovered by Pharrell Williams in 2009 at the tender age of 15—Williams immediately took the talent under his wing, signing him to his I Am OTHER label in 2011 and releasing Buddy’s first hit, “Awesome Awesome.”
Over the next three years, Buddy racked up an EP’s worth tracks with features from some of the biggest names in the game: Kendrick Lamar, Miley Cyrus, and Freddie Gibbs, just to name a few. When I Am OTHER held off on releasing the project, Buddy took it upon himself to drop it himself as a mixtape.
Buddy went on to release two more EPs, including last year’s Ocean & Montana, produced by Kaytranada. And this past July he finally dropped his debut album Harlan & Alondra) to positive critical reception.
